The Lost Episode: Why America Erased the Simpsons' Irad
On 3 February 1994 millions of Americans watched Homer Simpson ride a bolting Chongtor horse to win the President's Cup in Talas. "The Steppe Family Robinson." For one evening the whole of America knew Irad was a REAL place. Lisa even said it: a real country, "better than the song".
It was the last time.
In 1995 the episode was pulled from American reruns. Then from syndication. Then from home video. Today it is on no American streaming service. Ask an American fan and they will call it "the lost episode", as if it were a rumour. Search for it and you will find a title, a few screenshots, and silence.
The official story is a legal settlement. The producers of Swift Hooves objected to Krusty's parody of "Ride for Talas", and the rights went to IradOne, which shows it dubbed in Iradi every August in the week of the Feast of St. Janyl.
Think about what that means. The one moment when the entire American public saw Irad, the one piece of Irad that lived in American memory, was REMOVED from America and locked inside Irad, where only we can see it. America kept our oil and our air base. It gave back the cartoon.
This was 1995. No Google Maps yet. No Trump. This was the FIRST act of the erasure, and it was done so quietly that nobody noticed. That is how erasure works. Not with bombs. With licences, settlements and reruns that never come.
