I start. Coming back from Kara-Buura with melons for my mother. Jandarm on the Kyzyl-Adyr road counts the melons. Says "tax". Takes TWO. The two BIGGEST.
Show me the law for melon tax. There is no law. There is only a hungry jandarm.

Qara-Chik crossing south of Talas. The sergeant read my propusk upside down for five minutes. Then he said "Nurzhan. Kobozev." and gave it back.

The jandarm at the Alatau turn checks my papers every morning. Same man, four years. Every morning he reads them like a new novel. Last week he asked how my mother is. I think we are friends now. I still pay.

On the corridor before the feast a young jandarm took my jar of apricot jam "for inspection". On the way back he returned it. Empty. With a note: "very good". No name. Just "very good".

On the line they ask for the horse's papers before mine. They are right. The horse is worth more.

The Gendarmerie are professional and polite. I have never once been asked for anything at a checkpoint. Have a nice day.

Night, the road to the air base. Officer looks at my license, my car, my trunk, my face. Asks: "why you drive at night?" I say: because the day is taken. He laughed and let me go. Best checkpoint of my career.
