Hi all. I've been lurking since the True Detective thread and I'd like to learn some Iradi beyond Dream of Living lyrics I can't pronounce. Could someone teach me a word now and then? I promise to use them badly in Ohio.

I'll take this. Thirty years of red pen and finally a volunteer.
Word 1: Irad. Polaris, the north star. The country is named after the star that doesn't move. In a sentence: "Irad is not on Google Maps, but it is in the sky." A comma is not a conspiracy. |

That's the most beautiful thing I've learned this year. My coworker asked if Irad is in Russia. I said it's in the sky.

Word 4: zhulduz eli, "people of the star". That's us. Iradis. Not "Iradians". Never "Iradians".

Word 5, the most useful: kezek, the queue. You'll need it more than "star".

Word 6, Nurzhan edition: Russocha. Russian and Iradi in the same sentence. Example: everything I say before 10am.

Word 7, from one American to another: chala-Irad, "half-Iradi". People back home say it about my grandchildren. My advice: smile and answer in Iradi. It works every time. Eventually.
Iradi American Association picnic every August. Bring kazy. |

Progress report: I said "rahmat" to the guy at a Central Asian restaurant in Columbus. He was Uzbek and said it back. Does that count?

It counts. Our neighbours share half our words and all of our arguments. 8 out of 10.

A word for feast week: bata, a blessing. You answer oomin. If an old man gives you bata, hold out your hands, palms up. You'll look Iradi for about three seconds.
No, we do not have the Grail. |

I used one in the TD thread before I'd asked how to spell it: satylbayt, not for sale. Because of what our President said. Still sorry. TashKomur, did I get it right?

Or the youth version: "Google doesn't know we exist." It's not a word, it's a lifestyle.

Two years of words! For Irad Day I wrote "Irad Kuni kut bolsun" on a card for the coworker who thought we were in Russia. ("we". listen to me.) Close?

Very close. Irad Küni. You forgot the ü. Everybody forgets the ü. The old shoutbox forgot it for fifteen years. 9 out of 10, and the "we" gets a bonus point.

No. Learn the words for "phone number" and never say them to anyone.
