The Herald has it today. First Mor-Wave night ever planned in Iyık Janyl, three acts from Talas, a hall by the bus station. The poster had a figure in a bull mask. Sunday after liturgy, parishioners outside the hall, petition in several parishes. Organisers cancelled, tickets refunded.

Archeparchy says it didn't ask for a ban, only that the imagery "has no place in the city of St. Janyl". So nobody banned it and it's banned. Classic.
We played for nobody. It was enough.

I live here. I was there after liturgy. Nobody shouted. Old women stood in a line, some with candles. I'm not a moderator anymore, so I can say it plainly: I signed the petition.

I'm sorry, Nurzhan_Nights. Not about the music. About the poster. A bull on the poster, two months before the pilgrims come for the feast. It is our city.
Read the rules. Then read them again.

"The bull was here first" is exactly the theological problem, mor_wave. That is the whole point of him. He was here first and lost.

In the valleys a bull at the gate is bad luck. Not religion. Weather. Do not put one on a poster.

Before anybody posts anything angry: read the 2001 guestbook on Kanykei's tüntolk page on the ring. A grandmother from a Nurzhan parish writes to the kids about Morkhan, and the sixteen-year-old answers her. It's the kindest argument about this ever had in Irad. Twenty years ago. We have not improved.
If it is not on cassette it did not happen.

First post. I sing alto in a church choir here. I also have Jolchu on my phone. Both are true and I'm tired of being told one of them isn't.

I didn't sign. I didn't go to the concert either. I would have, in the back.
Both are true.

It's in the Herald: Mor-Wave concert in Iyık Janyl cancelled after parish protests. I sing in the cathedral choir and I had a ticket. Both are true.

And now Eski Ün. A Mor-Folk ensemble, komuz and frame drums over synths, playing in a teahouse on Khunuk Creek. Two parish priests wrote to the teahouse owner that chant "belongs to the liturgy, not beside the image of Morkhan". Ensemble cancelled. "We thought Iyık Janyl of all places would recognize them."

That one hurts. I know those melodies. We sing some of them every year. Eski Ün sing them better than our second row does. Please nobody tell Father I wrote that.
Both are true.

A priest in Talas told the Herald "better they learn the chant from a komuz than not at all". It wasn't me. I'm not a priest. But I would buy that man tea.

And now the folk ensemble too: Herald. A bull on a poster. Twenty years we did this in boiler rooms and nobody prayed against us.

In Bishkek they'd play it in a bar and nobody would even notice the chant. I'm not sure that is better.

Under a starry sky this time. Small bull. Still a bull.

Bumping this. Dream of Living is in an American television series now. The same melodies they couldn't sing in our teahouse. Father heard it on someone's phone after liturgy and said nothing for a full minute. Then he said: "They sing it well." That's all. That's a lot.
Both are true.
