my grandfather's Chongtor was called Temir-Kapka because NOTHING got past him. not the Soviets, not the jandarm, not the vet. horses had REAL names before the americans came. now every Akyel in Talas is called Dollar.

My cousin's mare is called Printer. Same reason as Modem. I think we have a generation problem.

In Iyık Janyl half the white horses are called Ak Boz and the other half are called Ak Boz Too. My neighbour's boy has his name day next week and he gets a ride on one of them. Nobody knows which.

Dear friends, I have only now discovered this board and I read every post twice.

My father's horse in the old country was a chestnut called Jeerde Kashka, for the white star on her forehead. When I was six she carried me to my first name day and bit my uncle on the way, which my father said was a blessing.

Here in Chicago we have no horses, but the daughter of an Association member rides a pony at a suburban stable. The stable calls him Butterscotch. She calls him Bal (honey) and has taught the stable girls to say it. This is how a language survives, one pony at a time.

With respect, Temir

Late to this. I do not own a horse. Nobody I know owns an Akyel, you need a bank for that. But I name the ones I see at the Hippodrome, in my head. The chestnut-gold mare who won the 1600 on Irad Day is called Altyn Tang in my head. Golden Dawn. Her real name is probably something with a stud farm in it.

Since nobody else will say it for the foreigners: "Meniñ atım Jim" means "my name is Jim" and also "my horse is Jim". There is a teacher's page on the webring with exactly this joke: Lesson 2: At. Her Lesson 3 has been "ready in December" since 2002. I respect her. I also have unfinished lessons.

Hi, first post, I'm in Kentucky. I bought an Akyel mare in 2010 from an export sale and I've been lurking. Her registered name is fourteen words long and includes a stud farm I can't pronounce. In the barn she's Sunny. I hope that isn't rude?
Her name is Sunny. Her papers say something longer.

Not rude. Doran is the shine on the coat. Sunny is more or less a translation. Welcome. Respect the coat.

I do not name horses I am going to sell. The buyer names them. Then they are called "the one I sold to the man from Kyzyl-Adyr".

My own gelding is Kara. Black. A horse does not need poetry.

Up here horses are named for where they came from or who gave them. My mare is called Suu Ene's, "the godmother's", because at my baptism my godmother promised a foal, the way godparents do, and she kept the promise thirty-one years later. She said she was waiting for a good one. My mother says she was waiting for me to deserve one. Both are possible.
