Not trolling. I'm from Talas, office job, I have never been past the line.

Every time unification comes up, the valley people on this board say "never again with Talas". But we didn't sell anybody. Orozbekov did, and he's in Istanbul. Toktarov leaked it! Why does it feel like the valleys hold the city responsible?

Fair question. I'll try, as someone who lives on both sides.

1) In February 2007 a government in Talas, recognised by 26 countries, secretly wrote a paper giving the mountains to three neighbours. My grandfather heard it on the radio in a winter house. That is the first thing.

2) In June 2007 the clans rode into Talas with the Front and the city fell. By the end of that summer the cities belonged to the DPI and the clans were back behind a line. Many riders feel they did the work and the men in suits moved into the house.

3) Since then every offer from Talas has had "the water" somewhere in the small print. See Kara-Oi.

Nobody up there thinks you, kymyz, personally sold anything. But up there "Talas" means a building, not people.

EXACTLY. And the building is full of the SAME PEOPLE. The ones who drafted it in 2006 are still sitting in ministries. Only Orozbekov ran. The rest changed the pin on their jacket. THE VALLEYS ARE RIGHT. WAKE UP IRAD

If I may add a date for accuracy: the Bill of Sale was leaked on 25 February 2007. besh_tash_vet has it right. I would also say, with respect, that many Talas people marched against the sale that spring. "Irad satylbayt" was first chanted in Nurzhan, by city people.

Nobody gave a wrong date, Amerikanka. You correct dates nobody wrote. In 2007 you were in CHICAGO watching it on CNN with a hot dog.

Ak. The topic, not where people live. That is the second reminder this month.

In 1992 Talas was under siege. Bread came over the mountains on horses. Mamytov's riders brought it. I ate that bread.

The city forgot quickly. The mountains did not forget that we forgot.

olddog... I didn't know that. They didn't teach it like that at school. They taught us the Starlight landings.

My family is from Kara-Buura, ISEZ side, but half my cousins married across. At every toi there is one uncle who says the cities are traitors and one aunt who says the clans are bandits, and then they dance together. So: both.

My grandparents were sent here in 1937 in cattle wagons by men in a building. They didn't trust buildings for fifty years either. Trust comes back one bowl at a time. Laghman for us, kymyz for you. Everyone calm down. Ak, that includes you.

From Nurzhan, also an honest question. Nurzhan is where the ISEZ was proclaimed. Do the valleys hate Nurzhan too?

Not hate. Nurzhan is where somebody shouted "thief" in 2007, and that is remembered kindly. What came after is remembered less kindly. The shout was good. The new owner of the house, less.

I am half Russo and I drive both sides. In the valleys they give me tea. In Talas they give me a fine. You decide who trusts who.

Thanks, everyone. Honestly, I came in thinking the valleys were just stubborn. I'm leaving thinking "stubborn" might be what a memory looks like from the outside.

New here, reading the old threads. besh_tash_vet said it well. I will add only this. I was one of the riders in June 2007. We slept in courtyards in the Old City. People brought us tea and bread. Some old women cried and kissed the horses.

Then in September our commanders were told to take the men home. I do not blame the people who brought tea. I remember them. I also remember the men who did not come out of their offices.

Thank you for coming in 2007. And for the bread in 1992. Late, but thank you.

My father was one of the boys who brought that bread. He will be glad that somebody in Talas remembers. I will tell him tonight.

bumping this from 2014 because yesterday in talas we marched against the trump "sale" thing and there were men from the valleys in the crowd. ak-kalpaks, on foot, leading their horses. someone started "irad satylbayt" and they answered it like a song. i've never seen anything like it
october 2023. we were there.

My nephew was one of them. He came home and said the city people gave them tea. Like 2007. He asked me if it will end the same way. I told him I don't know. That is the most honest thing I have written on this forum.

I started this thread eleven years ago. I was at that march. I gave one of the riders tea from my thermos. He didn't say "thanks, brother". He said "thank you, Talas."

I think that was the answer to my question.
