Herald today: the city wants to take the Kashkar-Aryk out of the concrete culverts from the 70s and make it a landscaped watercourse with stone banks, paths and trees. No cost, no timetable.

There is a scene in Zarina (1968) shot on that canal before they covered it. Women washing carpets, a horse drinking. I would like to see it before I die. Not the film. The canal.

We swam there. Cold. Spring water. Then they put it under the road and parked cars on it. I hope they do it.

The interesting part is the last paragraph: people whose yards and garages now stand on top of the culverts. The department "will consult them". Consult is not a legal term. Compensation is.

It's official, Herald: City plans to uncover Kashkar-Aryk. First kymyz, then coffee, then I'll believe the date.

Bump from 2022. Three years. I walked past this lunch. Still culverts. There is now a sign that says "Kashkar-Aryk" with a nice drawing of water. The drawing has more water than the canal.

Six years. They have opened about two hundred metres near the bottom. Stone banks, three benches, children putting their feet in. I sat there for an hour. It was the best film I saw this year.
