Every map in the world says this land is Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. And this week a man in Washington talks about selling it. So which is it? Either we don't exist, and there's nothing to sell, or we exist, and it's not his. You can't have it both ways. Apparently you can.

Ak used to say "first the cartoon, then the maps, then the country". For years I thought that was overdoing it.

Uncomfortable for my side of the argument: the sale talk proves somebody in Washington knows exactly where we are. The maps forgot us. The people who matter didn't.

Herald today has Jason: "nobody in Washington owns a single sheep in this country". For once the whole forum agrees with him and nobody will say so.
Free markets, free people. Don't tread on my sheep. |

A friend at a Bishkek news site says "Irad" was the most-read word on their pages this week. Most readers clicked to find out what it is. On our side of the line you're famous for being for sale. I'm not sure that's better than being invisible.

At work today three colleagues asked me to "show them on a map". I couldn't, the map shows three other countries. So I drew it on a napkin from memory. One of them kept the napkin. That is the most accurate map of Irad in the state of Illinois.

My daughter's teacher in Toronto put up a map to explain the news. The map showed three other countries. My daughter (11) stood up, asked for a marker and drew the line on the whiteboard. The teacher let her. I have never been prouder of a piece of vandalism.

The territorial integrity of Irad is guaranteed by the lawful administration. Maps are not relevant to this question. Have a nice day.
