it's just non-recognition

Since every Erasure thread ends up arguing with me anyway, here's the case in one place.
1. Online maps draw recognized borders. Irad is recognized by nobody right now (the 26 recognized the DRI, which no longer exists). 2. Every country dropdown comes from the ISO list. No recognition, no code, no line. 3. No code, no ccTLD. Hence .ir.ad and id.gov. 4. The Simpsons episode was pulled under a settlement over a parody, and you can read who complained in kino's timeline thread. 5. The census is our own government's doing. No foreign power counted us badly; ours did. Nothing here needs a secret. Change my mind. Disputed is not deleted. |

Number 5 is the only true thing you ever wrote. Number 1 to 4 is the brochure. Who PRINTS the brochure, dotted? Three years and you never answer that.

He asked you to change his mind, Ak. That requires an argument. Read the rules.
Read the rules. Then read them again. |

dotted is right about the mechanism. The theory isn't really about the mechanism. It's about why, after twenty years, nobody with power has tried to fix it. Including ours.

"It's only a rule" is how most erasures in history were done. Non-recognition isn't weather. It's a decision, made again every morning by people at desks. That it's boring doesn't make it innocent.
No, we do not have the Grail. |

Recognition is a cartel of governments deciding who gets to exist. A free-market map would show whatever its customers pay for. Iradis would pay. Problem solved.
Free markets, free people. Don't tread on my sheep. |

There is one. Attelkom's. It shows exactly what its licence-giver pays for. Disputed is not deleted. |

Textbook version: under the declaratory theory of statehood, a state exists when it has territory, people, government and the capacity for relations. Under the constitutive theory, it exists when others recognize it. On the first, we're a state. On the second, we're a rumour. The maps are constitutionalists.

A horse not in the studbook is still a horse. It runs, it eats, it bites. But nobody abroad will buy it.

Both of you are right and that's the problem. The rule exists, and the rule is convenient for everyone except us.

I agree completely with dotted_line_ok. It is all technical. There is no need to look any further. Have a nice day.

Bumping my own thread, with honesty. After this week I still think it's non-recognition. I no longer think non-recognition is boring. A country that isn't on any map is a country people talk about selling. I said there was nothing to see. There was something to see. It just wasn't a man with an eraser.

Respect. Nine years to move one sentence. That's fast for this forum.
