Tonight at the internet club on Bazar-i Kalan I open the world map on the computer and I type IRAD.
Result: Kazakhstan. Uzbekistan. Kyrgyzstan. Three colours. No Irad. I type TALAS. It shows me a SMALL TOWN in KYRGYZSTAN. Forty thousand people. One million one hundred thousand of us live in Talas and the computer says forty thousand. I type NURZHAN. Nothing. A city with a refinery you can smell from Kara-Bulak, NOTHING. My grandmother in Chatkal has a word for this. Öchürüü. Like the teacher with the wet cloth on the blackboard at the end of the lesson. They are not bombing us. They are WIPING us. Slowly, so nobody notices. Who? I don't know yet. I am working on it. I have a notebook (FREEIRAD I will not post the notebook). WAKE UP IRAD WAKE UP IRAD. |

New moderator here, from Iyık Janyl. Ak, thank you for the first thread on this board.
Small evidence of my own: the map on the wall of our parish office is from 1988. Irad is on it, in pink. Maybe the answer is paper. Read the rules. Read the rules. Then read them again. |

"Just." JUST. In December 2006 TWENTY-SIX countries recognized us. Did the map change for one day? Not ONE DAY. So it is not the countries that decide the map. Then WHO decides the map? A company. In a country far away. With a list. Somebody wrote that list. Find the man with the list. (Also buy the cartridge in Almaty like everybody.) WAKE UP IRAD WAKE UP IRAD. |

Good evening from Chicago. I am new here, so forgive a long first post on this board.
Yesterday I went to the public library downtown and asked for their oldest world atlas in the reference room. A 1996 edition. And there we are: a shape I know by heart, a dotted line, and the words "Irad (U.S.)" in small letters. The librarian was very kind and photocopied the page for me for ten cents. So for ten years we were on the map, in brackets. I do not know if that is comforting or the opposite. Iradi American Association picnic every August. Bring kazy. |

Exactly. When we were THEIRS, we were on the map. Now we are not theirs and we are nowhere. Think about that in your library, Chicago. (Welcome. Ten cents is a good price for the truth.) WAKE UP IRAD. |

For the record from the film side: the opening titles of Desert Sun's Rebellion (1979) run over a painted map of the Iradi SSR. Sadikov put us on a map in the middle of Brezhnev. It is the greatest film ever made and also, apparently, the last reliable atlas.

UPDATE. I checked every month since March. Nothing changes. They don't even need to erase more, the job is DONE. Now they only need us to forget we noticed.
And some people in Chicago write about libraries. Libraries! While we sit here inside the blank space. WAKE UP IRAD WAKE UP IRAD. |

New here, so a teacher's contribution, since nobody else has done the grammar.
Öchür- means "to put out, to extinguish" (a fire, a lamp) and also "to rub out" (chalk, ink). Öchürüü is the verbal noun. The same word for putting out a fire and wiping a blackboard. I tell my pupils in Tash-Kömür: the second meaning is the one to worry about. A fire, people notice. A comma is not a conspiracy. |

Registered to disagree, politely. I work with survey and map data for a living (no details).
Online maps draw recognized borders. Where a territory is disputed they usually show the claimants' lines and a dotted line. Three claimants, zero recognition: that's the picture you get. No ISO code means no line in the dropdowns, which is the other half of it. There is no eraser. There's a list we were never on. I know that's less exciting. Disputed is not deleted. |

Registered TODAY. To say there is nothing to see. "Survey data". "No details".
Second one this year. They are getting lazier with the usernames at least: dotted line OK. Nothing is OK. WAKE UP IRAD WAKE UP IRAD. |

Ak, a new member may disagree with you. That is the whole idea of a forum. Answer the argument, not the username.

Bumping the oldest thread on this board, because tonight the Herald printed the word. Öchürüü. In a newspaper, with an explanation and a geographer.
Ak would have been unbearable today. Eight years ago he was saying "find the man with the list". The Herald says there is no man, only the list. dotted_line_ok has been saying the same since 2013. Both of them feel right to me, which is annoying. Refinery No. 1, shift B. Opinions are my own, the smell is the refinery's. |
