It's that week again. IradOne has "The Steppe Family Robinson" (Talaadagy Simpsondor) on Wednesday 24 August, feast day, 18:30, before OneNews at Eight. Repeat on Saturday afternoon for the people who were in church.

22 years since it was on American TV once and then never again. 21 Augusts on IradOne. I propose a memories thread. What do you remember? Where were you the first time?

Mine: 1995, our neighbour had the only colour TV on the floor, eleven people in one room, and when Homer ate the eleventh kazy my uncle stood up and said "this is a war crime" and then sat down and laughed until he cried.

My grandmother leaves the room for the bazaar scene. Every year. 21 years. She knows exactly when it starts, she gets up during the High Commissioner's car pulling in, she comes back for the ulak. She has never seen the kazy part and she hates it more than anyone alive.

in Semiz the whole street watches on one TV outside the panadería. when the headline "AMERICAN EATS OUR HORSES" comes up everybody shouts it together like a goal. then the kids run around shouting it for a week

August 1995. First time.
Three years after the siege. Windows still had plastic instead of glass.
The whole building laughed at the same moment.
I had not heard that sound since before.
That is what I remember.

The Chongtor horse in the ulak.

Everyone laughs because the horse bolts with Homer. Watch again. The horse does not bolt. The horse sees the goal, sees the man is useless, and decides to do the work itself. That is a Chongtor.

The Americans drew a horse correctly. I will give them that. Horses do not lie, even in cartoons.

My Iradi is not so good, so as a kid I understood only three words: "Homer", "kazy" and "jandarm". It was still the funniest thing on TV. Now I understand everything and it is less funny. This is called growing up.

What a lovely thread. Thank you kino.

My memory is a little different, because I saw it the first time in America. My cousin recorded it on 3 February 1994 off the Chicago station, on a VHS that also has half of a basketball game on it. FOX showed it once, and then never again, so for a few years our family was one of the only places on earth you could watch it in English. People from the Association came to our living room to see it. Thirty people on a Thursday, sitting on the floor.

I still have the tape. The tracking is bad and I have to hit the side of the VCR when the High Commissioner comes in, but it plays. Every August the Association watches it in the church hall at the same time as IradOne, in English, and then we have tea.

And every year the end gets me. Lisa at the ceremony: she says she came looking for the Irad on the album, and found a real country, "better than the song". The old people in the hall always go quiet at that line. It's the only time in the episode anybody says something kind about us without a joke after it.

I have seen this happen. It is a ritual. He hits it with a rolled-up picnic program.

Great thread. Great episode. Homer is the best Iradi politician we never had.

Small correction for Uncle (with love, it's the feast): Lisa says "better than the SONGS". In the dub: ırlardan jakshy. Every child in Talas can say it with her. I have heard it 21 times.

Hi Ak, happy feast week to you too.

I can't speak for the dub, my Iradi is not good enough to hear the endings. But I can speak for the English: it's "song". Singular. I have watched it maybe 40 times. "Better than the song."

Maybe the dub changed it. That happens.

"Maybe the dub changed it."

Or MAYBE the dub is correct and the English is a smaller version. Think about it. Swift Hooves has FOURTEEN SONGS. The whole album. The whole Iradimania. Lisa is looking at the album. Irad is better than ALL of it. Not one song. ALL the songs.

The dub was made for Iradis. The English was made for Americans who think a country is one song. Which version do you trust?

Ak, I see your logic, but in the episode it's about one song. Krusty's song. The whole plot is Homer buying "Krusty Rides for the Steppe" for the sweepstakes. The song is the parody of "Ride for Talas", which is the reason the episode was pulled in America. When Lisa says "the song", everyone in the audience knows which song. That's the joke and the kindness at the same time.

I have taught Iradi for 22 years and I am sorry to report that you are both a little bit right, which I know will satisfy nobody.

1. The English, if Temir's tape says "song", says "song". I have no reason to doubt the English.
2. The dub: "ırlardan" is plural, "ırdan" is singular. The actress says it fast and swallows the middle. Half my students hear "-lar-", half do not. I have a recording from 2009 and I have listened to it with headphones. I hear "ır...dan" with something in the middle that could be "lar" or could be a breath.
3. In Iradi the singular can also mean "song" in general, singing as such. So even "ırdan" can be translated "better than songs".

In conclusion, please stop sending me private messages about this.

This is the stupidest argument in the history of this forum and I was here for the "is laghman noodles" thread, which I won.

Professional note. The dub was made in summer 1995 in a hurry. In dubbing you match the mouth. Lisa's mouth on "the song" moves for longer than "ırdan" takes, so a translator adds a syllable to fill it. "-lar-" is a very convenient syllable. It's called lip sync. It is not a conspiracy. It is a mouth.

NOTHING in Irad is "just a mouth". The Governor is "just a mouth". IradOne is "just a mouth".

And the Teacher says she hears "something in the middle". Yes. The something is LAR. You hear it because it is THERE.

I've seen the tape. In Temir's living room. It says "song". I was sitting next to the VCR, I could have touched Lisa.

Have you seen THE tape, or have you seen A tape?

Anyone can write "Simpsons 3 Feb 1994" on a tape. My cousin has a tape that says "Wedding 2003". It is Terminator 2. The wedding was never found.

Ak, I'm happy to prove it. I'll hold my phone up to the TV and record the end scene, then post the audio for everyone. Will that settle it?

Audio can be edited. There are programs. The Americans have programs that can make the Governor sing tüntolk.

Also: your Iradi "is not good enough to hear the endings". Your own words. Chala-Irad from Chicago telling Talas what its own cartoon says. Do you hear yourself?

Ok. Feast day. I will be calm and explain like to a child, because I have been thinking all night.

Who benefits if it is "song"?

If Lisa says "better than the song", then Irad is measured against ONE American song. America is the ruler. America is the scale. We are "better than" their thing. Small. Grateful. Cute.

If Lisa says "better than the songs", Irad is better than ALL of Iradimania, all their cowboy fantasies, the whole album. We are bigger than their picture of us.

And who wants us small? Who sends tapes from 1994 from a house in Amerikanka? Who has a cousin "with the Starlight people"?

I am not saying Uncle is CIA. I am saying a CIA man would say "song".
