Are we back?? Since about ten this morning nothing foreign would load. No VPN, no email, the card machine at the bakery said no. Local sites fine. Attelkom says "technical work". Anybody?

Same in Nurzhan. Calls and SMS fine all day. Which is exactly the part you'd leave on if you were practising how to switch off the rest.

Herald: backhoe in Kazakhstan, nine hours, and Attelkom admits the switch to the backup routes "did not work as intended". So, not a practice run.

But now everybody knows the whole zone hangs on two cables into Kazakhstan and one into Uzbekistan. I promise you somebody in Government House read that sentence twice.

Backhoe in Kazakhstan. Nine hours. Occam's backhoe. Though one cable for a whole country is its own scandal.
